'We Were Losing Everything'

Vicky Williams, the mother of the Packers' fifth-round pick, tells Packer Report the horrible — yet uplifting — story surrounding tight end D.J. Williams.

The Green Bay Packers used the 141st overall selection of last week's draft on Mackey Award-winning tight end D.J. Williams, who caught 152 passes during his career, just one off Arkansas' career record.

It was an exclamation mark on the second chapter of his life, an uplifting sequel to one of the darkest first chapters imaginable.

Vicky Williams married her high school sweetheart, David Edward Williams. The first 10 years of their marriage were great. They had three children — D.J. and older sisters Valerie and Vanessa — their dream house and successful careers in Carrollton, Texas.

Then, their world was turned upside down, starting when D.J. was 2. Her husband was hit with "two tragic events," Vicky recalled. He fell into the depths of depression and drug and alcohol use. He was diagnosed as manic depressive and bipolar.

Vicky often felt his wrath. At one point, he attempted to slam a skillet over her head. She deflected the blow at the last instant with her right hand. Her pinky finger, broken along with the pan from the impact, is crooked and serves as a stark reminder of 10 years of physical and mental abuse.
