The franchise's career rushing leader will make the news official during a Thursday night news conference.

Ahman Green will retire as a member of the Green Bay Packers during a Thursday night news conference.

A member of the Packers from 2000 through 2006, Green was one of the NFL’s top running backs. In each of his first five seasons with the team, he rushed for at least 1,160 yards, earning Pro Bowl accolades from 2001 through 2004. In 2003, he obliterated the team’s single-season rushing record by rumbling for 1,883 yards, averaging 5.3 yards per carry and scoring 15 touchdowns along the way.

He returned to the team in 2009, and while he had a minimal impact, he broke Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Taylor’s career team rushing record with 8,322 yards (Taylor had 8.207). He also holds franchise records for carries in a career (1,851, with Taylor next with 1,811) and season (355 in 2003, with Levens next with 329 in 1997) and 1,000-yard seasons (six, with Taylor next with five).

Green’s 2003 rushing total ranks eighth on the league’s charts. Taylor held the old single-season mark with 1,474 yards in 1962 but Green crushed it by more than 400 yards. Twice in seven weeks, he set the team’s single-game record. He rushed for 192 yards against Philadelphia on Nov. 10, 2003, then pounded out 218 yards against Denver on Dec. 28, 2003. Those games highlighted a franchise-record 10 100-yard games that season.

Green played his last game in 2009, and his career concludes with 9,205 rushing yards and 60 touchdowns. He played for the UFL’s Omaha franchise last year.

Schedule change

After Wednesday’s practice, defensive coordinator Dom Capers joked that, as a guy who’s coached in New Orleans, Carolina, Jacksonville, Houston and Miami, the players had no idea how lucky they were that coach Mike McCarthy had scheduled nothing but night practices at the start of training camp.

On Thursday, McCarthy reworked the schedule. Starting on Monday, the Packers will practice at 11 a.m. or 11:15 a.m. for the rest of training camp, making tonight’s practice the final night practice of the summer.
