Staff Likely Back Almost Intact

With Oakland having found its defensive coordinator — meaning Green Bay cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt is out of the running — only three coordinator posts remain open. That means the Packers should enter 2012 with only one departure, Joe Philbin.

Throughout the offseason, the Green Bay Packers' assistant coaches have been mentioned as possibilities for many of the head coaching and coordinator vacancies that had opened around the league.

Outside of offensive coordinator Joe Philbin becoming the leading man in Miami, the Packers' staff should return intact.

New Oakland Raiders coach Dennis Allen had expressed interest in Packers cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt but hired Stanford defensive coordinator Jason Tarver on Monday to fill the same role on his fledgling staff.

The coaching carousel — at least for head coaching positions and coordinators — has almost closed for the offseason, with all seven head coaching vacancies filled. In all, there were 29 coordinator positions that were up for grabs — 16 on offense and 13 on defense — and only three posts remain open.

New Tampa Bay coach Greg Schiano, formerly of Rutgers, hasn't hired any of his assistants yet. New Kansas City coach Romeo Crennel found an offensive coordinator on Monday (former Miami OC Brian Daboll) but hadn't hired a defensive coordinator. Pittsburgh's Mike Tomlin selected fired Chiefs boss Todd Haley, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported on Monday.

Incredibly, the Packers have lost just two coaches in the past two offseasons, even while winning Super Bowl XLV and posting a league-best 15-1 record this season. Along with losing Philbin, receivers coach Jimmy Robinson took a similar post with Dallas last offseason. Packers director of pro personnel Reggie McKenzie was hired to be Oakland's general manager last month. McKenzie, however, did not plunder the Packers' personnel or coaching staffs, and Philbin didn't take any of his former colleagues with him to Miami.

To replace Philbin, Packers coach Mike McCarthy promoted quarterbacks coach Tom Clements on Friday.
