Update: McAdoo Becomes QB Coach

Ben McAdoo

One day after Tampa Bay was denied permission to talk to him, Ben McAdoo replaces new offensive coordinator Tom Clements as quarterbacks coach.

According to NFL Network's Jason La Canfora, Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy has chosen Ben McAdoo as his quarterbacks coach.

McAdoo, who had spent the last six seasons as tight ends coach, will fill the role held by Tom Clements for the previous six years. Last week, Clements was named offensive coordinator, replacing new Miami Dolphins coach Joe Philbin.

La Canfora broke the news on Twitter on Wednesday; the Packers have made no such announcements and have not updated their coaching staff at Packers.com.

With that, the Packers need a tight ends coach. If McCarthy continues his trend of promoting from within, the internal candidates are offensive quality control coach Joel Hilgenberg (a former NFL lineman) assistant wide receivers/assistant special teams coach John Rushing (a former college defensive back) and defensive quality control coach Scott McCurley (a former collegiate linebacker).

Shuffling position coaches isn't out of the ordinary. Last year, McCarthy moved Edgar Bennett from running backs coach to receivers coach, and the receivers were statistically the best unit in the NFL this season. And if you prefer more of an apples-to-apples comparison, Andy Reid spent five seasons as Mike Holmgren's tight ends coach before replacing Marty Mornhinweg as quarterbacks coach 1997 and 1998. In 1997, Brett Favre won his third consecutive MVP, and in 1999, Reid was named head coach of the Eagles.

McAdoo, of course, will be tutoring Aaron Rodgers, who is coming off his first MVP award.

Here is Tuesday's news about McCarthy denying a Tampa Bay request to talk to McAdoo about being the Bucs' offensive coordinator.

New Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano is having a devil of a time filling out his coaching staff.

And this time, the Green Bay Packers are part of the reason.

According to the NFL Network, Packers coach Mike McCarthy denied Schiano's request to talk to Packers tight ends coach Ben McAdoo for his offensive coordinator opening.

Green Bay lost offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, who became Miami's head coach, and blocked him from interviewing McAdoo, as well. The Packers promoted quarterbacks coach Tom Clements to offensive coordinator, and McAdoo is in line to step into Clements' old role.

McAdoo joined the Packers in 2006, when McCarthy was hired as coach. His ties with McCarthy, however, go back to being an assistant offensive line/quality control coach with San Francisco in 2005 and with New Orleans in 2004.

Schiano has yet to fill either one of his coordinator spots. Earlier, Schiano tried to interview Cardinals assistant John McNulty for his offensive coordinator vacancy, but the Cardinals denied that request. McNulty, Arizona's receivers coach for the past three seasons, reportedly will become the Cardinals' quarterbacks coach. On Monday, the University of Florida's Dan Quinn turning down the defensive coordinator position Monday, according to the Gainesville Sun. In fact, Schiano, the former Rutgers coach, hasn't officially hired anybody to his staff.

At this late date in the hiring season, teams are reluctant to let their assistants interview elsewhere because all of the good coaching candidates have been hired.
