If Ryan Grant were to sign with the Detroit Lions, the Packers would be left with a questionable backfield considering the injury history of James Starks and Alex Green.

Veteran Green Bay Packers running back Ryan Grant is scheduled to visit the Detroit Lions this weekend with the Packers showing little interest in bringing the unrestricted free agent back to Green Bay.

The Lions' murky depth chart, topped by Jahvid Best (concussions) and Mikel Leshoure (marijuna arrest; possible suspension), includes only injury-prone veteran Kevin Smith as the one sure thing.

Grant also visited the Patriots and another, unspecified, reportedly team has shown interest, as well. He could be effective in a rotation but hasn't shown the same burst through the line of scrimmage or speed he did in 2008 and 2009, when he posted back-to-back 1,200-yard seasons.

Grant played in only one game in 2010 and has 143 carries in the past two seasons. Playing in a time-share with James Starks, Grant carried 134 times for 559 yards (4.2 average) and two touchdowns, while Starks carried 133 times for 578 yards (4.3 average) and one touchdown. Grant’s 80-yard touchdown catch was the Packers’ second-longest of the season.

The Packers appear content using Starks as the lead running back in a rotation that would include 2011 third-round pick Alex Green (Hawaii), who is recovered from an ACL tear as a rookie. Starks, however, missed his senior season at Buffalo and has missed significant time in each of his two seasons in the NFL.

The Packers' running back depth comes from a collection of undrafted free agents, including former Ohio State starter Brandon Saine (18 carries for 69 yards as a rookie) and ex-USC running back Marc Tyler.
