Star Green Bay Packers tight end Jermichael Finley missed Friday’s practice with a “mild concussion” that is expected to sideline him for a “couple of days,” coach Mike McCarthy said after Friday’s practice in the Don Hutson Center.
The injury happened at some point during Thursday’s practice, McCarthy said. One play that stands out is when cornerback Tramon Williams collided with Finley went Finley dropped to his knees in an attempt to catch a poorly thrown ball. Finley was slow to get up after that play.
Also, defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove was “excused for a personal matter” and is expected back for Saturday’s practice.
Otherwise, the injury report is unchanged, with Desmond Bishop (calf), fullback John Kuhn (knee), outside linebacker Frank Zombo (hamstring), defensive lineman Johnny Jones (knee), guard Jaymes Brooks (hamstring), tackle Derek Sherrod (leg) and tight end Andrew Quarless (knee) still on the physically unable to perform list.
The week ahead
-- Friday’s practice was moved indoors because of significant rain on Thursday night and Friday morning. The final practice this week will be held at 8:15 a.m. on Saturday. There is no practice on Sunday, 8:15 a.m. sessions on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and 7 p.m. on Thursday. Family Night starts at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 3.
-- With Zombo out, Brad Jones spent his entire day with the outside linebackers. It appears Jones will play inside and outside while Jamari Lattimore is anchored inside after playing outside last year as a rookie.
-- Anthony Levine got some work at safety with the No. 1 unit, though M.D. Jennings took most of the first-team reps alongside Morgan Burnett.
-- The first skirmish of training camp broke out after Aaron Rodgers threw a touchdown pass to Randall Cobb that traveled about 65 yards in the air. The scuffle broke out near Rodgers but it was impossible to see what precipitated the brief scrum. It may not have had anything to do with the shoving match that followed, but running back Brandon Saine and cornerback Jarrett Bush had a heck of a one-on-one matchup as Bush blitzed from the slot. Saine bought Rodgers just enough time for Rodgers to move a few steps to his right to uncork the long pass.
-- Saturday’s practice will be the first full-pads session of camp. “It’s always a big day,” McCarthy said. “There’s mileposts in every training camp and the first padded practice is definitely one of them, even more so than the linemen. Frankly, the linemen would rather be in pads than not be in pads as far as the protection for the shoulders and so forth. Down there in the trenches, you definitely benefit from it. And it gives us the ability to really get after some more individual work and technique and fundamentals that we need to.”
We will have more after today’s locker room session.
