The promising cornerback could be out two or three weeks, or he could be out much longer with surgery. House was one of 21 players held out of Saturday night's practice. That and much more from Ray Nitschke Field.

It’s not as big of a blow as losing Desmond Bishop for most, if not all, of the season, but the Green Bay Packers suffered another potential big loss with cornerback Davon House.

House sustained a partial dislocation of his left shoulder while serving as a gunner on the punt team during the third quarter on Thursday at San Diego. House, who turned in a strong performance on defense in terms of tackling and physicality to stake his claim to a starting position, will be out at least two or three weeks but potentially a lot longer.

“I’ll say this: He’s very eager to get after the rehab,” coach Mike McCarthy said after Saturday’s practice. “His shoulder subluxed, so you have to go through a two- to three-week period to make sure it’s settled down and at that time the option of playing with a harness or potential surgery is really what we’re looking at.”

Charles Woodson played with a harness for most of the 2006 season and turned in eight interceptions, with his 26 passes defensed ranking third in team history.

“Yes, he did play with a shoulder harness, which is tough to do as a DB,” McCarthy said. “That’s not one of the positions you want to be putting a harness on your players because of the limitations it puts on the joint.”

Injury report

An incredible 21 players were on the injury report, which played a role in practice concluding in about 1 hour and 35 minutes.

Returned to practice: DT Mike Daniels (knee and groin).

Old injuries: WR Shaky Smithson (ankle); WR Diondre Borel (groin); RB Duane Bennett (knee); CB Davon House (shoulder); RB Brandon Saine (hamstring); FB Jon Hoese (hamstring); CB Sam Shields (elbow); RB James Starks (turf toe); TE Eric Lair (knee); LB Desmond Bishop (hamstring/knee); G Ray Dominguez (ankle); T Marshall Newhouse (concussion); TE Ryan Taylor (concussion); WR Greg Jennings (concussion); WR Tori Gurley (groin); TE Jermichael Finley (quad); DE Jerel Worthy (knee).

Active PUP list: OLB Frank Zombo (hamstring), DL Johnny Jones (knee), T Derek Sherrod (leg) and TE Andrew Quarless (knee).

The week ahead

Saturday’s practice was the final night session of training camp. The team will practice at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. All are scheduled for full pads, though that’s subject to change given the length of the injury list. There is no practice on Wednesday, with a home preseason game against Cleveland starting at 7 p.m. on Thursday. The Packers will not practice on Friday and Saturday.

Four-point stance

— The Packers have not signed running back Cedric Benson, though with just four backs on the practice field, they clearly could use another body. “Any potential player acquisition, there’s nothing to really speak on until something occurs,” McCarthy said. Green Bay got through practice with Alex Green, Marc Tyler, John Kuhn and Nic Cooper. James Starks is listed as “week to week” with turf toe and Green is taking limited reps as he comes back from a torn ACL.

— With House and Shields sidelined, second-round pick Casey Hayward got his first taste of the starting lineup. “Sam’s coming along, and I thought Casey did some really good things in the game,” McCarthy said. “As a whole, he graded out very well, I was very pleased with what I saw, particularly in the secondary. I thought Casey got off to a good start.”

— With Marshall Newhouse still out with a concussion, Herb Taylor and rookie seventh-round pick Andrew Datko rotated in and out of the lineup at left tackle every couple plays.

Reggie Wells, a 10th-year pro with 91 career starts who was signed on Wednesday, will add to the Packers’ depth at guard and possibly tackle.
