Packers Add Ross, Vanderlin to PS

Jeremy Ross (Jason O. Watson/USP)

Drew Vanderlin is a Green Bay native; Jeremy Ross had a predraft visit with the Packers in 2011.

The Green Bay Packers added two players to their practice squad after promoting guard Greg Van Roten on Saturday and losing defensive end Lawrence Guy to the Colts this week.

Before Wednesday's practice, the Packers signed defensive end Drew Vanderlin and receiver Jeremy Ross.

Vanderlin (6-3, 288), who played high school ball at Green Bay Southwest, was a three-year starter at Division II Michigan Tech. He finished his career with 20 sacks and 36 tackles for losses, including 6.5 sacks as a senior and 5.5 as a junior, when he was first-team all-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the team's defensive player of the year both seasons. Vanderlin participated in Green Bay's rookie camp on a tryout basis but was not signed.

Ross (6-0, 215) entered the NFL with New England as an undrafted free agent out of California in 2011. Ross spent the final 13 games of last season on the Colts' practice squad. He was released during training camp this year and out of the league since then.

Ross had a predraft visit with the Packers in 2011, when the team was searching high and low for a kick returner. The Packers wound up selecting Randall Cobb in the second round and signing Shaky Smithson instead.

In 43 career games, Ross averaged 15.2 yards per punt return – second in school history behind DeSean Jackson -- and caught 57 passes for 764 yards and three touchdowns.
