Greg Jennings, possibly playing his final games as a member of the Green Bay Packers with his contract set to expire at season’s end, said his sister wasn’t acting as his unofficial spokesman when she trashed Aaron Rodgers during a series of rants on Twitter during Sunday’s game against Minnesota.
Among the Tweets from Jennings’ sister, Valyncia Jennings:
“ARod is the most overrated QB in the league! He is no where near Peyton or Brady! It sickens me. Peyton would avg. 5 TD with this squad!!!”
“@GregJennings ball out so you can leave this team! They will miss u when your gone! It’s all good bye Packers! Cheap team, can’t afford him”
“He’s the best freakin receiver these clowns got! Now take your talents to south beach & get paid.”
“It is so obvious that @GregJennings is being blatantly ignored by ARod. Maybe @ halftime GJ should put on #18 then ARod will force to him.”
“Aaron Rodgers smh! Had him in the slot wide open no one even covered him! Where is Peyton Manning when u need him! This is utterly pathetic”
“GJ is the only receiver that has to jump in the air with both hands up to get the (ball)!!! It's ridiculous I pray he departs GB ASAP!”
For the record, Jennings caught eight passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns.
It certainly isn’t outside the realm of possibility that Jennings, upset with his contract status and disappointed that the team he’s played for since 2006 has shown no interest in striking a long-term deal, has voiced his frustration to family members. Jennings, however, simply said, “No,” when asked if Rodgers thought his sister was speaking for him.
“I talked to Aaron about it. We’ve talked,” Jennings said. “His brother (Jordan Rodgers, the quarterback at Vanderbilt) has done the same thing. We all have siblings. Our siblings are going to say things sometimes; hopefully, they don’t but we have to answer the questions for them because we’re in the spotlight. It’s just the nature of the game.”
Jennings heard about his sister’s comments through the public relations staff after the game and said he called his sister upon leaving the stadium. Jennings said “I’m not mad at her” and that she’s entitled to her opinion, though he was disappointed her thoughts put him in an awkward situation. His sister's Twitter page has been taken down; Jennings said that was not at his request.
“I saw something on the timeline, someone said, ‘Love Greg Jennings but he has to control his family,’” Jennings said. “My feelings about that? If we all controlled our loved ones, there would be no hate, no crime, no anything in the world. It would be a better place. As a parent, I can’t control everything my kid does, so how do you expect me to control an adult? It’s not the reality that we live in. Do we hope people would make the right decisions and do the right thing? Absolutely. Is that going to take place? No.”
Jennings joked that he would show her this week’s game plan to see if it met her satisfaction.
"I didn’t care for it, particularly, but everyone’s entitled to their own opinion," Jennings said. "Social media’s like that. I look at my timeline sometimes and there aren’t too many Greg Jennings fans out there sometimes. You know, she’s entitled to her own opinion. I’m going to give her a call and let her see the playbook and maybe she’ll be more satisfied with the playbook this week and see if I’m implemented as much as she would like."
