Former Vikings WR Cris Carter a Hall of Famer
Carter played 12 seasons for the Vikings, from 1990-2001, after starting his career with the Philadelphia Eagles from 1987-89. The Eagles selected him in the fourth round of the 1987 draft out of Ohio State. When he wore out his welcome in Philadelphia, the Vikings claimed him on waivers for $100. He played the 2002 season with the Miami Dolphins before retiring.
"The Vikings are thrilled that Cris has been selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame," said Vikings owner/chairman Zygi Wilf. "For over a decade Cris entertained Vikings fans with his trademark great catches and competitiveness, as he became one of the most beloved players in franchise history. Cris represented the Vikings organization in a first-class manner both on and off the field. We appreciate his place in Minnesota Vikings history, and we look forward to seeing him enshrined in Canton later this year."
Carter was one of the final 10, joining RB Jerome Bettis, DE/LB Charles Haley, OT Jonathan Ogden, OL Larry Allen, DB Aeneas Williams, WR Andre Reed, coach Bill Parcells, DE Michael Strahan and DT Warren Sapp.
In 2000, Carter became only the second player in NFL history to catch 1,000 career passes. He finished his career with 1,101 receptions and 130 touchdowns, both ranking second in NFL history at the time of his retirement. His 130 touchdowns came from 13 different quarterbacks. He had 13,899 yards receiving.
He had 42 100-yard games receiving and recorded 1,000-yard receiving seasons eight consecutive years, and set the NFL record (at the time) with 122 receptions in the 1994 season. He followed that up with another 122-catch season in 1995.
He was named to the All-Decade Team of the 1990s and won the 1999 NFL Man of the Year Award. He was also a first- or second-team All-Pro in 1994, 1995 and 1999 and was selected to the Pro Bowl eight times (1994-2001).
It was Carter's sixth year of eligibility. He joined four first-year eligible players – Larry Allen, Jonathan Ogden, Warren Sapp and Michael Strahan – among the 15 modern-era finalists and two nominees from the seniors committee.
This is the second consecutive year and the sixth in the last eight years that the Vikings have had a former player elected to the Hall of Fame – Cris Carter (2013), Chris Doleman (2012), John Randle (2010), Randall McDaniel (2009), Gary Zimmerman (2008), Warren Moon (2006).
A group of 46 voters form the Selection Committee.
The 15 modern-era finalists were determined by a vote of the Hall's Selection Committee from a list of 127 nominees that earlier was reduced to a list of 27 semifinalists, during the multi-step, year-long selection process.
To be elected, a finalist must receive a minimum positive vote of 80 percent.
