The Receiver statue, located at Titletown Brewing Co. on the renamed Donald Driver Way, will be given a Donald Driver-style makeover.

Donald Driver had his way with countless defensive backs over the years.

Now, the retired Green Bay Packers receiver will have his way — as in Donald Driver Way.

Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt announced during Wednesday’s retirement ceremony in the Lambeau Field Atrium that Pearl Street, located downtown just north of the Fox River, would be named in honor of the Packers’ career receiving leader.

Titletown Brewing Co., which is located on the corner of Dousman and Pearl streets, is home to The Receiver, a 22-foot fiberglass statue that stood outside the old Packers Hall of Fame until the Hall moved into Lambeau Field in 2003. Using redevelopment district funds, Schmitt announced that the statue would be refurbished, with the No. 88 changing to No. 80 and “Driver” going on its back.

“So now you’ve got The Receiver statue looking like Donald Driver, we have to name that street Donald Driver Way,” Schmitt said. “It’s your street, your statue. We love you. Congratulations.”

During a brief question-and-answer period, Driver said: ““It’s going to mean the world. There are so many things we go through and we don’t know what to expect at the end of the day. To be honored with my own street and a statue is truly something special. That shows you the love. That shows you the support. That shows you the dedication of what I’ve done for this organization and this community that the community will honor me the same way. It’s truly something special. I love you guys. It’s been an awesome, awesome ride.”

Schmitt gave Driver the key to the city, “knowing it’s always your home, no matter where you are.”

The proclamation read: “Presented to Donald Driver for his commitment to lifting the lives of the citizens of the Green Bay community and all Packer fans.”

Also, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker proclaimed today Donald Driver Day.
