Packers President Mark Murphy provides a glimpse into the team's thinking regarding legendary quarterback Brett Favre.

The Green Bay Packers have retired the numbers of five players, all of whom are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy hopes to retire Brett Favre’s No. 4 before he’s expected to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016.

“We do want to bring Brett back into the fold, and plan on retiring his number,” Murphy wrote in response to a fan’s question in his monthly column at Packers.com. “He deserves to have his number retired for what he accomplished, and meant to the Packers, during his time here. I thought Aaron Rodgers and Brett jointly presenting the Comeback Player of the Year Award at the NFL Honors program was a great first step. It is really just a question of timing in terms of retiring his jersey. The timing has to be right for both Brett and the organization. Brett will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer in 2016, and we would like to retire his number prior to his induction.”

Favre, a three-time MVP who led the Packers to victory in Super Bowl XXXI, threw for 61,655 yards and 442 touchdowns during his Packers career. That's more than the combined totals of Nos. 2 and 3 on the Packers' all-time list, Rodgers and Bart Starr.

For those harboring bitterness with how the Packers and Favre parted ways, with Favre eventually playing two seasons with rival Minnesota, Murphy said it’s time to move on.

“I know that many of our fans were upset that Brett played for the Vikings,” Murphy wrote. “As time goes by, though, I think wounds are healed and people focus more on the great things he did for the team during his 16 years here. As the recent signings by Greg Jennings and Desmond Bishop show, many players in the League go on to play for rivals later in their careers.”

The Packers have retired No. 3 for Tony Canadeo, No. 14 for Don Hutson, No. 15 for Bart Starr, No. 66 for Ray Nitschke and No. 92 for Reggie White.
