'More Testing' Needed for Jones

First-round pick Datone Jones sustained an injured ankle during his one and only snap of Friday's preseason game

"More testing."

That's what Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy said about first-round pick Datone Jones on Saturday afternoon, the day after Jones injured his ankle in his one and only snap of Friday night's preseason opener against Arizona.

"As far as the medical, I do not really have any more information for you on Datone," McCarthy said. "He's going to go through some more testing this afternoon. We've been in meetings throughout the afternoon so I don't have an update on him or a timeline."

Typically, McCarthy's words wouldn't send off any alarm bells. But the Packers have been snakebitten by injuries. By midseason last year, they were without their first-round picks from 2010 (Bryan Bulaga), 2011 (Derek Sherrod) and 2012 (Nick Perry). Bulaga went down again in last week's scrimmage with a torn left ACL.

Jones, who fell at the snap and was blocked by guard Jonathan Cooper, is expected to play a vital role on the Packers' defense. Jones was checked briefly by the team's medical staff after the injury and spent the rest of the first half on the bench. It didn't look like Jones came out of the locker room for the second half.

While Jones might not have much of a role in the base defense, he figures to be a key performer as an interior pass rusher in the nickel and dime packages.

Without Jones and Mike Neal, the Packers mounted almost no rush on the Cardinals' quarterbacks. Mike Daniels had the only pressure by a Packers defensive lineman.
