Source: Packers Adding QB Tolzien

Scott Tolzien, who led Wisconsin to the Rose Bowl in 2010, will be signed to the practice squad on Sunday, according to a source.

The Green Bay Packers will use one of their practice squad spots on former Wisconsin Badgers and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Scott Tolzien, a source told Packer Report on Saturday.

Tolzien will be the third quarterback on the club behind Aaron Rodgers and B.J. Coleman.

Tolzien led Wisconsin to a Big Ten co-championship and the Rose Bowl as a senior in 2010. He went undrafted and signed with San Diego following the 2011 draft. After his release by the Chargers at the end of training camp that summer, he was claimed off waivers by the 49ers to work behind Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick.

With Smith's trade to Kansas City, Tolzien started training camp as San Francisco's No. 2 quarterback. He was released on Monday, with the 49ers going with Colt McCoy and B.J. Daniels behind Kaepernick. In two preseason games, Tolzien completed 18-of-34 passes (52.9 percent) for 188 yards, with no touchdowns and one interception.

The Packers usually keep three quarterbacks, and have started the past few seasons with two on the 53-man roster and one on the practice squad. It's possible the Packers will use Tolzien for some intel on their Week 1 opponent.
