Notebook: Vikings lose QB, claim DE

The San Francisco 49ers were one of the teams reportedly interested in Josh Freeman last week when he was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Instead, they settled for former Vikings quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson, whom the Vikings waived Tuesday to make room for Freeman on their 53-man roster. Plus, a former Viking was promoted, injury updates and more.

Bethel-Thompson started his career with the 49ers, spending the 2011 training camp and preseason there.

After being released from the 49ers that year, he played for the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the UFL, coached by Dennis Green, then spent the final two weeks of the regular season on the Dolphins' practice squad.

The Vikings signed him to their active roster in 2012 and he was inactive for every regular-season game, but was active for their playoff game against the Green Bay Packers because starter Christian Ponder didn't play due to a triceps injury.

Bethel-Thompson was inactive for the first three games of 2012, but he was active for their win over Pittsburgh because Ponder was inactive with a rib injury. He could have been re-signed to the Vikings' practice squad if San Francisco hadn't claimed him.

Bethel-Thompson played for Sacramento State for his final three seasons in college after transferring from UCLA, and his hometown is San Francisco.

The 49ers waived QB John Skelton to make room for Bethel-Thompson.

VIKINGS CLAIM DEFENSIVE END

The Vikings claimed DE Justin Trattou off waivers from the New York Giants. Trattou was active for all five of the Giants' games this year, registering three tackles. He played in six games last year, with one tackle.

He was originally signed by the Giants in 2011 as an undrafted free agent out of Florida. He spent time on their practice squad and active roster in 2011.

After not playing in 2012, the Giants re-signed him in March.

In order to make room for Trattou, the Vikings waived DE George Johnson.

INJURY UPDATE

Although most of them, if not all, are expected to be ready for Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers, the Vikings had five players who were limited in Wednesday's practice – CB Chris Cook (groin), TE Rhett Ellison (knee), QB Christian Ponder (rib), S Jamarca Sanford (hamstring) and DT Kevin Williams (knee).

For the Panthers, DT Dwan Edwards (hamstring), S Robert Lester (hamstring), CB D.J. Moore (knee) and TE Greg Olsen (foot) didn't practice. DT Colin Cole (shoulder), a former Viking, was limited, and S Quintin Mikell (ankle) was a full participant.

NOTES

  • The Jacksonville Jaguars promoted former Vikings offensive tackle DeMarcus Love from their practice squad to their active roster.

  • The Panthers promoted WR Marvin McNutt and C Brian Folkerts from their practice squad to their active roster.

  • The Giants waived Trattou to make room for RB Scott Da'Rel on Tuesday.
