Guion Further Fortifies DL

The Packers struck a one-year deal with Letroy Guion, who started 13 games for Minnesota last season. How do his numbers compare with Vance Walker and Al Woods, two other defensive linemen courted by Green Bay in the past few days?

The Packers entered free agency with just four defensive linemen under contract.

Now they have seven with the addition of former Minnesota Vikings reserve Letroy Guion, as announced by agent Thomas Kleine on Twitter. Guion joins the recently signed Julius Peppers, recently re-signed B.J. Raji and holdovers Josh Boyd, Mike Daniels, Datone Jones and Jerel Worthy.

Guion, who will turn 27 on June 21, signed a one-year deal, as did Raji.

Guion (6-4, 303), a fifth-round pick by Minnesota in 2008 out of Florida State, just completed his sixth season. He started a total of 28 games for the Vikings the past two seasons, including 13 in 2003. Last year, he tallied 21 tackles, including one sack and three for losses, plus forced and recovered a fumble.

Guion averaged about 31 snaps per game last season. In's measurement of 80 defensive tackles (4-3 and 34- schemes) who played at least 25 percent of the snaps against running plays, Guion ranked 34th in run-stop percentage, a metric that measures impact tackles against the run. In PFF's measurement of 63 tackles who played 25 percent of the snaps against the pass, he ranked 60th in pass-rush productivity, which measures sacks, hits and pressures per passing play.

The Packers also courted Vance Walker, who signed with Kansas City, and Al Woods, who signed with Tennessee.

Walker ranked 44th run-stop percentage and 18th in pass-rush productivity. Woods ranked 26th in run-stop percentage and would have ranked 56th in pass-rush productivity had he reached the 25 percent playing time threshold.

If the Packers' intention was to get slimmer up front, they're certainly accomplishing that. C.J. Wilson (306 pounds), Johnny Jolly (325) and Ryan Pickett (340) remain unsigned while Guion (303) and Peppers (283) have been signed.
