The team released 18 players and placed four others — including third-round pick Khyri Thornton — on injured reserve.
The big name who was released was cornerback Jumal Rolle, a source told Packer Report early in the day. Cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt was incredibly high on Rolle but he was simply a victim of the numbers, with the Packers having five established cornerbacks, a bunch of quality linebackers and injury issues on both lines. Instead of Rolle, the Packers kept sixth-round cornerback Demetri Goodson, who has been out with a concussion.
Rolle was among the most agonizing cuts made by the team, the source said.
The Packers would love to bring back Rolle to the practice squad but that would seem to be a long shot, given the talent he has flashed.
"He’s a guy that’s from a smaller school, so the learning curve is still there," Whitt said midway through training camp. "The thing I’m not going to do with any of these young guys – Rolle, Meech (Goodson) – that have a limited defensive background, the mistake I made with Sam (Shields) in 2011 was taking him too fast. I’m going to make sure that the progression and the development of the player is proper, that I hit every angle before he’s thrown out there and I’m not making that mistake with another player again."
Safety Chris Banjo also was released. That's a surprising move, too. While the Packers are deep at safety, he was a No. 1 on the punt return, kickoff and kickoff return this week. According to a source, he had a "great" training camp but was caught up in the numbers.
Receiver Myles White also was released. He caught nine passes as a rookie but had an inconsistent camp and had extremely limited value on special teams.
Here is the list, as announced by the Packers:
RB Michael Hill
G/T John Fullington
T Jeremy Vujnovich
TE Justin Perillo
WR Alex Gillett
WR Myles White
WR Kevin Dorsey
With Gillett, Whitt and Dorsey out, Jeff Janis is in.
CB Jumal Rolle
CB Ryan White
S Chris Banjo
ILB Jake Doughty
OLB Adrian Hubbard
DT Carlos Gray
Also, offensive tackle Aaron Adams (knee), linebacker Nate Palmer (knee), tight end Jake Stoneburner (undisclosed) and defensive tackle Khyri Thornton (hamstring) were placed on injured reserve. Stoneburner said his good-byes via Twitter, meaning he’ll be released with an injury settlement.
New England, meanwhile, released Jerel Worthy. That means the Packers lost the conditional draft pick they received from the Patriots in a trade.
