Miscues don't help Hunt erase doubts

Defensive tackle Cletidus Hunt didn't do much to help his cause in Monday night's 21-3 loss to Seattle in the preseaon opener at Lambeau Field.

After a clash with coach Mike Sherman and continuing speculation about his weight, Hunt may have dug his way deeper into the doghouse instead.

The sixth-year veteran lined up in the neutral zone twice during Seattle's 14-play, 68-yard touchdown drive. The second infraction negated a second-and-goal stop of Shaun Alexander from the 3-yard line. Fullback Mack Strong scored easily with a run straight up the middle on the next play.

"That hurt us on the one drive," Sherman said of the penalty before the touchdown. "We can't line up on their side of the line of scrimmage."

Monday night's game would have been a good time to get back into the coach's good graces after showing up out of shape and failing to complete precamp physical testing. Hunt pushed Sherman's patience to the limit when the DT came to the first full practice mistakenly dressed in shorts instead of the required pads. A shouting match ensued, followed quickly by assurances from both parties that it was a run-of-the-mill family flare-up and no lasting harm was done.

An on-field assurance may have been even better, but it wasn't in the cards for Hunt vs. the Seahawks. Hunt didn't even record a tackle - his name appeared in the gamebook only as the guilty party in the offsides calls.

Hunt had nowhere to hide; in addition to hearing his number called for the Packers' first two flags, he also appeared on the cover of Monday Night's Game Day program.
