Torrance Marshall's lingering hamstring injury finally has gotten the best of him. The Packers today placed the linebacker on season-ending injured reserve and brought back linebacker Nick Rogers.

Rogers returns to Green Bay for a second time. The Packers waived him on Tuesday to make room for running back James Jackson, signed to shore up a suddenly shallow group of running backs. The Packers also re-signed Rogers Oct. 19, three days after they waived him in order to promote Kelvin Kight to an injury-depleted wide receiver corps. Green Bay originally claimed Rogers on waivers from Minnesota, Sept. 6.

Rogers, a 6-2, 251-pound linebacker out of Georgia Tech, has played mostly on special teams in six games this year. He was inactive for the other three contests, and did not appear on the roster Oct. 17 at Detroit.

Marshall is tied for second on the club with eight special-teams tackles. He originally injured his hamstring in training camp but played in nine of the 10 Packers games in 2004, missing the opening game at Carolina. He aggravated the injury on while covering the second punt of the game for the Packers in their 16-13 win over the Houston Texans on Sunday.

Marshall said he underwent a magnetic resonance imaging test yesterday and it revealed that he has a severe hamstring strain. He said he probably wouldn’t have been activated for Monday night’s game against St. Louis and possibly would have missed Green Bay’s Dec. 5 game at Philadelphia. So, coach and general manager Mike Sherman told the fourth-year pro this morning that he will be placed on injured reserve.

“It’s a numbers game,” Marshall said. “If I’m only going to be available for two weeks and (they’re) limited at the linebacker spot. (Sherman’s) hand was forced. He had to do something.”

Marshall, who is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after this season, says that he plans to remain in Green Bay to rehab his injury and support his teammates.

“I don’t have nothing else to do” he said. “I don’t want to go home and just sit around, be a couch potato. I’ll come out, work out, lift weights and work out, just hang out. Rehab. There’s nothing else better to do. Why not be here?”
