The Green Bay Packers Tuesday re-signed unrestricted free agent Hannibal Navies and waived linebacker Steve Josue.

Navies will be competing against newly acquired Ray Thompson and fourth-round draft pick Brady Poppinga for the strong-side linebacker position.

Navies, 27, underwent major shoulder surgery this off-season and did not draw much interest in free agency. It is believed that he received a one-year contract for the veteran’s minimum of $540,000.

Despite battling an injured shoulder most of the season, Navies started 14 games on the strong side for the Packers in 2004, his second season as a regular. In 31 games (30 starts), Navies has 191 tackles (136 solo), 1½ sacks, one fumble recovery and two forced fumbles.

Thompson, 27, was signed by the Packers last week. He spent his first five seasons with the Arizona Cardinals.

Josue had re-signed with the Packers in December and spent the season’s final month on the 53-man roster, playing in four games as well as the playoff contest.
