He was assistant head coach and linebackers coach at Mississippi

Assistant coach Shawn Slocum is leaving the University of Mississippi to join the Green Bay Packers' staff, according to a statement released by Ole Miss officials Friday.

The Packers had not made any announcements regarding Slocum as of Friday evening, but he presumably will assist coordinator Mike Stock with special teams. Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said earlier this week that he planned to hire an assistant special teams coach and a defensive quality control coach.

Slocum joined the Ole Miss staff in January 2005 as assistant head coach to Ed Orgeron and linebackers coach.

"Having spent a year working with coach Orgeron, I learned a lot about (a) championship organization," Slocum said in the statement. "I wish coach Orgeron and the Ole Miss family the very best as I look forward to the opportunity to coach in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers." David Saunders on Friday was named as the Rebels' linebackers coach, replacing Slocum.

Saunders, who was 7-21 in three seasons at the Jackson-based Division III Millsaps, returns to Ole Miss, where he was assistant to the athletic director for recruiting from 1999-2000 and coordinator of high school and community college relations from 2001-2002.
