Ex-Packers head coach to assist Kubiak, coach offensive line

Former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike Sherman agreed to a three-year contract with the Houston Texans on Tuesday as an assistant to head coach Gary Kubiak. Sherman is expected to be formally introduced today, according to reports.

Aside from assisting Kubiak, Sherman will oversee the offensive line with line coach John Benton. Sherman was head coach of the Packers since 2000 and general manager from 2001-04.

"There are other teams that would have liked to have him," Kubiak told the Houston Chronicle. "We gave him some time, and we're really pleased that he's with us, because he's one heck of a coach."

"We stressed patience. Some teams panic when they don't get somebody right away. But we didn't, and it paid off with some real good coaches."

Sherman, who pursued other head coaching jobs before accepting Kubiak's offer, led the Packers to a 53-27 record before he was fired on Jan. 2. Green Bay finished 4-12 in 2005, Sherman's only losing season. Sherman was offensive coordinator/tight ends coach in Seattle under Mike Holmgren in 1999. He was Green Bay's tight ends coach in 1997-98.

Sherman signed a guaranteed two-year contract extension worth $6.4 million with the Packers last August. Green Bay is still obligated to pay Sherman minus what he is paid by the Texans.

Sherman has never coached the offensive line in the NFL, but he was a line coach for Texas A&M in 1992 and 1993. Kubiak was the Aggies' running backs coach at the time.

Kubiak and Sherman will try to resurrect a Texans offense that ranked 30th of 32 teams in total yards (253.3 average per game) last year.
