Anderson, the Packers' third-round selection in the 2002 NFL draft, started the past two years as well as parts of his initial two seasons at UCLA. Terms of his agreement were not released, but defensive back Bhawoh Jue and linebacker Torrance Marshall, each taken in the third round last year (71st and 72nd overall), received three-year deals worth about $1.4 million apiece. Anderson was the 92nd overall pick this year.
Anderson participated in the Packers’ post-draft minicamp in late April, but was unable to attend the June minicamp because UCLA was still in session. The NFL forbids rookie draft picks from participating in team practices if school is in session.
The 5-foot-11, 213-pound Anderson will likely compete for a backup spot at safety against Antuan Edwards and Scott Frost in training camp. He also may be used as an extra cornerback in passing defenses. He earned second-team All-Pacific 10 Conference honors last year and was second among UCLA defenders with 63 stops. He also had two interceptions and a team-high 10 pass breakups.
The Packers' remaining 2002 draft choices to be signed include WR Javon Walker (round 1), FB Najeh Davenport (4), DL Aaron Kampman (5a), QB Craig Nall (5b) and T/G Mike Houghton (6). The first day of practice for rookies is Wednesday, July 24.
