Packers general manager dismisses report of deal with Oakland for wide receiver

Packers general manager Ted Thompson released a short statement this afternoon regarding the rumors of a trade for disgruntled wide receiver Randy Moss:

"We dismiss this report as wild speculation," Thompson said.

A Boston Herald report earlier today indicated that the Packers are close to acquiring receiver Randy Moss from the Oakland Raiders in a trade. In return, the Raiders would get quarterback Aaron Rodgers and a draft pick.

Thompson is on the road scouting players in preparation for the NFL draft. He was in Baton Rouge on Wednesday to attend the LSU Pro Day.

Packers Chief Executive Officer Bob Harlan, who has fielded numerous calls this off-season from Packers fans regarding Moss, downplayed the trade talk. Harlan told the Green Bay Press-Gazette that he has not spoken with Thompson since he left Green Bay on Tuesday.

“If (a trade) was that close, (Thompson) would have called us by now,” Harlan told the Press-Gazette.

Harlan also told that Press-Gazette that Thompson did not indicate to the team’s board of directors during its regular meeting Tuesday that a trade was imminent.

The Herald cited ‘a Wisconsin source’ saying that the Packers will deal Rodgers and a seventh-round draft pick in 2008 to the Raiders for Moss, tight end Courtney Anderson and a conditional 2009 draft pick, depending on how Rodgers played for the Raiders in 2007 and 2008.

The Herald article also noted that "one source close to Rodgers adamantly denied the rumor, saying, to his knowledge, the Raiders and Packers have not had substantive discussions."
