Lineman was attempting comeback from quadriceps injury

Offensive lineman Kevin Barry was released by the Packers on Friday because he failed the team's physical, PackerReport.com has learned. Barry missed all of last season with a quadriceps injury that he sustained in a minicamp practice last May.

Barry signed a two-year, $2.785 contract with the Packers in March of 2006, guaranteeing him $1.2 million in bonuses. He figured to be a top candidate to start at guard for the Packers till he ruptured a quadriceps muscle above his left knee during a pass-blocking drill.

Barry, who is listed at 322 pounds, appeared to be in good shape, but never took part in any of the team's minicamps or Organized Team Activities practices this off-season. It is quite likely that he has yet to regain the strength in his left leg to the satisfaction of the Packers. A source with access to NFL Player's Association data informed PackerReport.com that Barry was waived because of a failed physical.

Barry's agent, Russell Wittman, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that other NFL teams have inquired about his client's services.

Barry made Green Bay's roster as an undrafted free agent in 2002. He was a backup right tackle during his first four seasons and used quite often in the offense's U-71 formation, featuring two tackles on the right side of the line.

Barry finished his career in Green Bay by playing in 59 games with eight starts.

With second-year pros Jason Spitz and Daryn Colledge entrenched at the guard positions, and second-year pro Tony Moll playing tackle and guard, Barry likely would have faced an uphill battle to make the roster in training camp.
