Packers make more moves

A day after reducing their roster to the mandated limit of 53 players, the Green Bay Packers made more moves in preparation for next Sunday's season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Packers placed running back Noah Herron on season-ending injured reserve and claimed fullback John Kuhn on waivers, the team announced.

Herron injured his knee in the Packers' final preseason game Thursday night at Tennessee. The third-year pro underwent an arthroscopic procedure on his knee Saturday. Doctors repaired some minor damage to the knee, according to Packers general manager Ted Thompson, but Thompson said Herron would not have been available until after the bye week.

"Noah was injured worse than we anticipated after Thursday night," Thompson explained. "We didn't feel like that it was what it was, but as it turns out it was a little more significant, and that put us in a real bind. It's heartbreaking to Noah, it's heartbreaking to us as Packers to have to make this transaction. But we had to do it because there's a 53-man roster in order to do this going forward, and we didn't think there was any way we'd get him back before the bye, and we just didn't have the luxury of being able to do that."

The Packers claimed Kuhn on waivers from Pittsburgh, a day after released veteran Brandon Miree. The second-year pro from Shippensburg (Pa.) played nine games with the Steelers in 2006. He spent the 2005 season on the Steelers’ practice squad.

"We we looked at him a lot last year, and we considered him in a similar type transaction last year, and we wound up doing something a little different," Thompson said. "He was a runner at Shippensburg State, which now we have two players from Shippensburg State on this team. He was an outstanding runner I suppose. But he's been there on the practice squad on and off for a couple years. He's a big guy, he's tough, a very square blocker. He catches the ball well. He can run the ball when necessary downhill in short-yardage situations. We just felt like, we only had one fullback, and we needed to get some more umph there, and we think he'll be a good addition. Supposed to be a very good guy."

Rookie Korey Hall enters the season opener as the team's starting fullback. He beat out Miree, who sustained a neck stinger injury early in training camp and never returned to form.

Kuhn was en route to Green Bay today and was not at practice this afternoon.

Without Herron, the Packers currently have four running backs - Brandon Jackson, Vernand Morency, DeShawn Wynn and newly acquired Ryan Grant.

The Packers gave the New York Giants an undisclosed draft pick in next year's NFL draft to get Grant on Saturday. Thompson said he tried to get a running back with more experience but like what Grant has to offer.

"We talked to other teams about different guys. We liked what we saw in Ryan during the preseason," Thompson said. "He has nice size, he runs well, he catches the ball well. He plays on all their special teams, and we felt pretty comfortable with him. I know he hasn't played a lot in the National Football League, but what we saw on the preseason tape and what we know of him as a person, we feel pretty good about. We talked to Carlyle, who played college ball with him, and Frank Walker, who was a teammate of his with the Giants. He's a good guy, typical Notre Dame kind of kid, so we feel pretty good about him."

Seven signed to practice squad
Signed to the practice squad were wide receiver David Clowney, wide receiver Chris Francies, tight end Clark Harris, linebacker Spencer Havner, tackle Orrin Thompson, quarterback Paul Thompson and running back Corey White.

The Packers are able to sign one more player to the practice squad under NFL rules to reach the maximum number of eight players.
