President says the ceremony will be in 2008 at Lambeau Field

Brett Favre's number 4 will be officially retired by the Green Bay Packers this year, the team's president and chief executive officer said today.

Mark Murphy told the Associated Press that he had a preliminary discussion with Favre, and that both Favre and the organization agreed that his number 4 would be retired during the 2008 season at Lambeau Field. No other details were immediately available.

Murphy says a decision on when to do it will be made after the schedule comes out in April.

Favre played for the Packers from 1992-2007 and retired from football earlier this month.

The Packers retired defensive end Reggie White's number 92 on Sept. 18, 2005. It was only the fifth time in team history that the Packers formally removed a uniform number from its roster. The Packers also have retired the numbers of receiver Don Hutson (14, on Dec. 2, 1951), quarterback Bart Starr (15, on Nov. 11, 1973, and linebacker Ray Nitschke (66 on Dec. 4, 1983). The team has no evidence of a formal ceremony for running back Tony Canadeo, but it is believed his number 3 was retired on "Tony Canadeo Day" on Nov. 23, 1952, according to the Packers media guide.
