Packers kick off second day with solid selection; Lee, Brohm good picks

April 27, 2008
The Draft
I am sitting here flipping between the NFL Network and ESPN. It is round three and the Packers just picked a big tight end from the University of Texas named Jermichael Finley. Good for them. They need tight ends. He looks athletic but is still a bit raw, being a red-shirt sophomore. The question is can he contribute immediately?

In round two, they took a corner from Auburn - Patrick Lee. This pick also makes sense. Al Harris and Charles Woodson are not getting any younger and there is no one of note backing them up.

Earlier in round two they took Brian Brohm, a QB from Louisville. This is a good pick in my mind. Most people are high enough on him to think that he would have gone sooner in the draft. It is good value to get a highly rated QB to compete with Aaron Rodgers or give the Pack depth at a position that they are very thin.

They traded out of round one into round two and took a receiver named Jordy Nelson. The team is deep at this position but the kid looks like he can improve the position and with Donald Driver getting up their in age, this is a decent move. I guess Ted Thompson is not pulling our leg when he says that he takes the best player available. If that was not the case, I doubt he drafts a wideout with pick No. 36.

I hope they take some offensive linemen soon and a couple of linebackers.
