Hawk out for Saturday’s game at 49ers

Ryan Grant also will miss the game, though GM Ted Thompson is not worried the high-priced running back has barely practiced in camp.

A.J. Hawk was held out of Wednesday night’s practice, and coach Mike McCarthy said his standout weak-side linebacker would not play in Saturday night’s preseason game at San Francisco.

Hawk sustained a chest injury during Monday’s game when he broke up a third-down pass play. McCarthy said Hawk likely wouldn’t play even if Saturday’s game were a regular-season contest.

Also out Wednesday: receivers Ruvell Martin (jaw contusion and mild concussion), Greg Jennings (knee) and Brett Swain (quad contusion), tight end Tory Humphrey, running backs Ryan Grant (hamstring) and DeShawn Wynn (ankle), linebacker Desmond Bishop (Achilles), offensive lineman Orrin Thompson (ankle) and defensive linemen Ryan Pickett (hamstring), Justin Harrell (back) and Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila (knee).

Neither Grant nor Wynn are likely to play on Saturday, and McCarthy said Martin and Bishop would be “close.”

Grant agreed he needs to be “bounced around” a little before the regular season, but said two preseason games will be enough.

During a midafternoon news conference, general manager Ted Thompson wasn’t concerned that Grant has had only a couple of practices since the Packers lost the NFC championship game. He skipped offseason practices and missed the first week of practice in a contract dispute.

“We know what kind of player Ryan is, and we have a good group of backs that need some playing time, anyway,” Thompson said. “So, we’re not overly concerned about it. Again, with any of these, there’s a trade-off. Do you want to get him back out there, or do you make sure you don't have a recurring problem? Those are the two sides.”

Thompson said Harrell — who hasn’t practiced since needing back surgery in May — is “making progress.” Gbaja-Biamila, meanwhile, hasn’t practiced since early in training camp. He had knee surgery in May.

“We’re anxious to get him back out there, just like we are with the rest of the fellas, but you can’t put the cart before the horse,” Thompson said. “We don’t want to prolong this, so we want to take our time and make sure we make smart decisions in terms of using any of these guys that are nicked up a little bit.”

Back at practice were centers Scott Wells and Junius Coston, cornerbacks Al Harris and Charles Woodson and defensive tackle Johnny Jolly. Wells said the week-and-a-half off was “exactly what I needed” to recover from a strained abdominal.

“Having a competitive nature, missing any game — preseason, Family Night, whatever — you’ve got that hunger to go out there,” Wells said. “What really hit me is when Driver hit that (Bengals) guy on the sideline.”
