Fifth-Rounder for Comp Pick

The Packers were awarded a fifth-round draft pick after losing Colin Cole to Seattle last offseason.

The Packers were awarded a fifth-round draft pick on Monday after losing Colin Cole to Seattle in free agency last offseason.

Compensatory draft picks are awarded by the league by way of a top-secret formula that weighs free agents signed with free agents lost. The Packers lost Cole to the Seahawks last season while signing only Duke Preston, who failed to make the team.

The primary factor in determining compensatory draft picks appears to be a player's contract, followed by playing time and awards. Cole signed a five-year, $21 million contract with the Seahawks and wound up starting 15 of 16 games. Cole, who started seven games in five seasons with the Packers, recorded a career-high in tackles but had no sacks.

The Packers got Josh Sitton in 2008 with a fourth-round compensatory pick and Scott Wells with a seventh-round compensatory pick in 2004.

Compensatory picks can not be traded.
