| Biography: |
The Vikings signed Chris Claiborne in March 2003 in somewhat of a surprise move. Claiborne was one of the top free-agent linebackers available, but after almost a month of free agency he remained unsigned and the Vikings’ priorities on defense were more geared toward the backfield and line. After receiving strong reviews about Claiborne, head coach Mike Tice and the Vikings signed the linebacker.
He is expected to be the starting strongside linebacker for the Vikings until Greg Biekert is done, at which point Claiborne will probably move to middle linebacker. After four seasons in Detroit, Claiborne has established himself as belonging in the upper tier of linebackers in the league.
2002: Claiborne had 145 tackles and a career-high 4.5 sacks and three interceptions, but the Lions were apparently concerned about his work ethic and ability to control his weight.
2001: Registered a career-high 167 tackles and added four sacks, three forced fumbles and three interceptions. Twelve of his 16 starts were at middle linebacker
2000: Broke the 100-tackle barrier for the first time in his career, getting 125. Played on the weak side.
1999: Was named first-team All-Rookie by three national publications and voted rookie of the year by his teammates. Started 13 of 15 games on the weak side.
College: All-American and All-Pac 10 as a junior in 1998. Earned National Defensive Player of the Year from The Sports Network and Football News and Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year in 1998. Also earned the Butkus Award as the nation’s top linebacker in his final season at Southern California.
Personal: Earned numerous national honors as a player at J.W. North (Riverdale, Calif.) High School. Played linebacker, tailback and punter in his senior season.
