Rodgers Will Play, Probably with Nelson

Aaron Rodgers will make his preseason debut on Saturday at St. Louis, but coach Mike McCarthy didn’t know if Matt Flynn or Scott Tolzien would serve as the No. 2 quarterback or if Chase Rettig would get a chance in the fourth quarter.

“We’ll see how the pace of the game goes,” McCarthy said when asked about Rettig on Thursday. “We’ll look at the snaps of Scott and Matt. He may have a chance to get in in the fourth quarter.”

Receiver Jordy Nelson, who returned to practice this week after missing Saturday’s game at Tennessee with a minor hamstring injury, is on course to play, barring a setback.

“You want everybody to play. It’s not just two guys,” McCarthy said when asked if it’s important to get Rodgers and Nelson on the field together in the preseason. “We want to get everybody out there and get on a rhythm on offense and defense and try to play as many players as we possibly can on special teams. That’s something we talked about, some potential different rotations today that we’ll hit in practice (Friday). Just trying to get as much information as we possibly can on our players.”

Out for the game are running back Rajion Neal (knee), linebacker Joe Thomas (knee), tight end Colt Lyerla (knee), offensive lineman Don Barclay (knee), receiver Jared Abbrederis (knee) and defensive lineman Letroy Guion (hamstring).

Asked if Guion is ready to making his training camp debut, McCarthy said, “I hope so. We’ll see how next week goes.” Recommended Stories
